For beginning or learning knitters, Vicki Square’s The Knitter’s Companion: Deluxe Edition is a wonderful resource. Full of information, handy pictures, and clearly written instructions, this book takes you through the basic techniques of knitting.  Terminology and abbreviations are fully covered, as are the most common cast-ons and bind-offs.  This is one of the most detailed beginning knitter’s books I’ve seen in a while.  Square touches on yarn weight, gauge, proper sizing, size charts, and ease.  She literally covers every topic necessary for a knitter who wants to start out on a firm base of knowledge.

The clear language of the book is easy to understand.  I’d suggest this book to someone who wants to brush up on the basics, or who wants to teach themselves how to knit.  The book even includes a pair of DVDs to better illustrate the techniques covered in the book.  In fact, this book is so comprehensive that it has a small gauge tool right in the back of the book.  Everything you need to become a successful knitter is detailed in this concise, well written book.  Square even goes so far as to include care instructions for hand knit items; to me that’s just an indication of what a wonderful resource this book really is.  Square has taken the time to think of and explain every aspect of knitting.  For beginners who are earnest about building their skills as a knitter, this book would be an invaluable resource.
