How to Knit the Wave Stitch

This simple but elegant lace knitting stitch is a fabulous introduction to the world of lace knitting. If you're new to doing yarn overs or creating patterns with more dynamic rows, the wave stitch is a great place to start and get some practice. When doing lacing, there are factors that knitters have to take into consideration that are not as important in other forms of knitting, such as gauge and tension. Because of that, practicing on a stitch like the wave stitch is one of the best ways to ease yourself into lacing.

The subtle ebb and flow of the garter stitch rows created by these yarn overs makes this stitch a great option for things like shawls and scarves. Using a lightweight yarn, this stitch is also great for those spring and summertime knitting projects, when you want a garment that will breathe a little bit more.

Materials List

  • Knitting needles
  • Yarn

Instructions

  1. CO multiple of 6 sts + 1.

  2. Row 1: (RS) K1, *kw2, [kw3] twice, kw2, k2; rep from * to end.

  3. Row 2: (WS) knit dropping all extra loops of previous row.

Note: For the stitches that have multiple loops: knit into the first loop of the stitch and drop the remaining loops in that stitch off of the needle. This is what creates the height in the waves of your stitch.

  4. Row 3: Kw3, kw2, k2, kw2, *[kw3] twice, kw2, k2, kw2; rep from * to last 2 sts, kw3, k1.

  5. Row 4: knit dropping all extra loops of the previous row.

  6. Repeat rows 1-4 until you reach your desired length.
