Whoever said that knitting a hat had to be a complicated and difficult endeavor? This pattern for the Winter Days Knit Rib Hat is geared for beginners and results in a hat that is stylish and colorful as can be. The beginner knitting pattern uses just one ball of yarn and is the perfect project for anyone who is new to knitting. Advanced knitters will appreciate the simplicity of this pattern, too. No one will ever guess how little time it took you to complete this cute pattern! This is one hat that you will want to wear all winter.


Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge16 sts = 4" (10 cm); 20 rounds = 4" (10 cm) in ribbing, slightly stretched. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Finished SizeFits most adults. Hat circumference (slightly stretched): 18” (45.7 cm)

Materials List

  • Red Heart® Hopscotch™: 1 ball 7953 Waterslide
  • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needle: 4.5mm [US 7] 16” (40.6 cm)
  • Susan Bates® Double Pointed Needles: One set 4.5mm [US 7]
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle



  1. Cast on 80 sts. Join into the round, being careful not to twist sts, and place marker at beginning of round.

  2. Round 1: *Knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to end.

  3. Work in Knit 2, Purl 2 ribbing until hat measures 10” (25 cm) from cast on.

Shape Crown

Note: Change to double pointed needles when work is too small for circular needle. 

  1. Round 1: *Knit 2, purl 2 together (dec 1 st); repeat from * to end – 60 sts.

  2. Rounds 2-4: *Knit 2, purl 1; repeat from * to end. 

  3. Round 5: *K2tog, purl 1; repeat from * to end – 40 sts.

  4. Round 6: *Knit 1, purl 1; repeat from * to end.

  5. Round 7: *K2tog; repeat from * to end – 20 sts.

  6. Round 8: Knit.

  7. Round 9: *K2tog; repeat from * to end – 10 sts.

  8. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.


  1. With yarn needle, weave yarn through remaining sts; gather sts up firmly and secure. 

  2. To wear, fold brim up.
