  • Size 6 mm (U.S. 10) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge

15 sts and 22 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.


 

INSTRUCTIONS

Stripe Pat

With MC, work 8 rows.
With A, work 8 rows.
With B, work 8 rows.
These 24 rows form Stripe Pat.
Make 2 pieces alike.
With MC, cast on 100 (120-140) sts.
1st and 2nd rows: *K2. P2. Rep from * to end of row.
3rd and 4th rows: *P2. K2. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 4 rows once more.
First 8 rows of Stripe Pat are complete.
With A, work 8 rows in stocking st.
(Next 8 rows of Stripe Pat are complete).
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, proceed in stocking st as follows:
Next row: (RS). K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
Beg with a purl row, work 5 rows even. Rep last 6 rows 1 (0-0) time more. 96 (118-138) sts.
Next row: (RS). K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
Beg with a purl row, work 3 rows even. Rep last 4 rows 3 (1-0) time(s) more. 88 (114-136) sts.
Next row: (RS). K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
Next row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 18 (28-29) times more. 50 (56-76) sts.
Size 3XL/5XL only: Next row: (RS). K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
Next row: P1. P2tog. Purl to last 3 sts. P2togtbl. P1.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times more. 60 sts.
All Sizes: Place markers at each end of last row.
Neck Shaping: Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, proceed as follows:
Sizes XS/M and L/2XL only: Cast off 1 st beg next 4 (2) rows. 46 (54) sts.
All Sizes: Cast off 2 sts beg next 4 rows to 38 (46-52) sts, then 3 sts beg next 2 (4-6) rows to 32 (34-34) sts, then 5 sts beg next 2 rows. Cast off rem 22 (24-24) sts.
Neckband: With RS facing and MC, pick up and knit 58 (62-66) sts along cast off edge between markers.
Next row: P2. *K2. P2. Rep from * to end of row.
Next row: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. P1. *K2. P2. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K2. P1. K2tog. K1.
Next row: P1. P2tog. *P2. K2. Rep from * to last 5 sts. P2. P2togtbl. P1.

Finishing

Pin garment pieces to measurements and cover with damp cloth leaving cloth to dry.
Sew center front and back seams, matching stripes.
Fringe: Cut strands of MC 10 ins [25.5 cm] long. Taking 3 strands tog, knot into fringe 1 inch [2.5 cm] apart across lower edge of Poncho. Trim fringe evenly.

I don't know how to knit but this Stylish Stripes Poncho is great pattern for a crochet project of exactly the same design. I love stripes so I don't mind starting from scratch with this project. Awesome stripes!

I knitted this a while back for my mom's birthday in a medium size and it was a little too tight and short. Has anyone else had this problem, or should I have just gone with a large?
