Knitting Needle Size10.5 or 6.5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge14 sts = 4" [10 cm]; 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Welt stitch.

Finished Size45" [114 cm] circumference x 16.5" [42 cm] long.

Materials List

  • RED HEART® With Love® Stripes™: 2 balls 1975 Sandbar Stripe
  • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needle: 6.5mm [US 10 1/2], 24" [60cm] long
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

Welt Stitch (worked in the round):

Rounds 1-3: Knit.
Rounds 4-6: Purl.

Repeat Rounds 1-6 for Welt st.

Poncho

Cast on 156 sts. Join to work in rounds, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.

Beginning with Round 1, repeat Rounds 1-6 for Welt st until piece measures 8" [20.5 cm] from beginning, ending with Round 6.

  1. Shape Shoulders:

    Decrease Round: (K2, k2tog) around – 117 sts.

    Continue in Welt st until piece measures 12" [30.5 cm] from beginning, ending with Round 6.

    Decrease Round: (K1, k2tog) around – 78 sts.

    Continue in Welt st until piece measures 16 1/2" [42 cm] from beginning, ending with Round 3.

  2. Stretchy Bind-Off:

    Bind off Row: K2, *insert left needle into front of 2 sts on right needle (from the left), k2tog through the back loop, k1; repeat from * around until all sts have been bound off. Fasten off last stitch.
     

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block lightly, if desired.

This such an easy pattern, yet it looks so elegant. I like it because you can add it to any outfit, even to a coat and it will look nice. An extra layer in the winter is always welcome. It can be worn in and outdoors. It also can be done in several colors, a good stash buster. Thank you.
