What does it mean to pull tail through last row and pull to gather? Ive cast off all my stitches but the last one, and I would usually knot that last stitch. Is this sis telling me to actually thread the long tail back into the entire last row of cast off stitches?

I think you are supposed to bind it off as usual, but leave a long enough tail to weave it through the last row, then pull it together to make it bunch at the top. That's what I've seen in other patterns.

You do not bind off, you thread a needle and thread the yarn through each stitch on the needle, removing the stitch after you have pulled yarn through and then pull to gather the top, if you bind off the gather will not work.

I want to make this hat with 5 Bulky wool. What adjustments should I make and should I use needle size in pattern or on wool packaging?

You will need to rewrite the pattern for that weight yarn, I suggest using a 10.5 needle and a cast on of 62 stitches and doing a knit 2 tog over the last row before you run the yarn through to ensure it gathers correctly at the top.

Another simple hat that should be quick to make. I think I would make this one for myself, and I dont normally wear hats like this. I know it calls for US size 9 (5.5mm) needles, but I think I would like to use my US size 10 for this. I wonder how much it would alter the size.

You could but it will be too tight and it will not look anything like the picture.

To knit garter stitch in the round, work every other round in purl, as you would if you were doing stocking stitch on straight needles.

Hi matterregan 899369 2, that gauge information is not part of the pattern and has been deleted. Please refer to the updated information. Sorry for the inconvenience! -Editors of AllFreeKnitting

This is the perfect hat pattern. I prefer garter stitch with variegated yarn. I feel the yarn's pattern shows up better and usually does not pool. I make a lot of hats for charity and this hat will work up quickly, look great and be warm. All pluses. Thank you.

large eye blunt needle is used to run the yarn through to gather the top, sew the seam and weave in ends. Hope this helps.

No, what you are saying is not true, it will be garter stitch on both sides. This is knit on straight needles with a seam, so both sides will look the same.

I think it would be easier to run the yarn through the last row without casting off and gather from there. I'll try it both ways and see which I like better.
