Easy

Knitting Needle Size8 or 5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge16 sts = 4” (10 cm); 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in pattern. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Finished SizeHat circumference: 18 (20, 22)” [46 (51, 56) cm].

Materials List

  • RED HEART® Tweed Twist™:1 ball 9385 Neon Royal
  • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needles: 5mm [US 8] 16” (41 cm)
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle

Instructions

Directions are for size Small; changes for sizes Medium and Large are in parentheses.

Hat

Cast on 72 (80, 88) sts. Place marker to join in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
Rounds 1-5: Knit.
Rounds 6-10: *K2, P2; repeat from * around.
Rounds 11-13: Purl.
Rounds 14-16: Knit.
Repeat Rounds 11 - 16 until work measures 5” (13 cm) from cast on edge, ending with Round 13.

Crown

Round 1: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * around – 63 (70, 77) sts.
Rounds 2-3: Knit.
Rounds 4-6: Purl.
Round 7: *K5, k2tog; repeat from * around – 54 (60, 66) sts.
Rounds 8-12: Repeat Rounds 2-6.
Round 13: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * around – 45 (50, 55) sts.
Rounds 14-18: Repeat Rounds 2-6.
Round 19: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * around – 36 (40, 44) sts.
Rounds 20-21: Knit.
Rounds 22-24: Purl.
Rounds 25-27: Knit.
Rounds 28-33: Repeat Rounds 22-27.
Rounds 34-35: Purl.
Round 36: *K2tog; repeat from * around – 18 (20, 22) sts.

Finishing

Cut yarn and using yarn needle, draw through remaining sts twice. Draw up firmly; fasten securely. Weave in all loose ends.

This is a cute hat, and easy to make. I like that it's knitted on circular needles so there is no seam to sew up the back! The only thing I would change is that I would add some ribbing to the first rows, since the stockinette stitch edge tends to curl up and sometimes lose its shape over time.
