  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 4mm [US G-6] (hat)
  • Three 1” buttons
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle


GAUGES: 21 sts = 4” [10 cm]; 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st. 16 hdc = 4” [10 cm]; 10 rows = 4” [10 cm]. CHECK YOUR GAUGES. Use any size needles or hooks to obtain the gauge.

NOTE
Jacket is worked sideways from Sleeve cuff to center of Front and Back. Jacket and Booties are knit and Hat is crocheted.


LEFT SLEEVE
With C, cast on 36 (42, 48) sts.
Knit 4 rows.
Cut C and join A.
Work in St st until Sleeve measures 4 (5, 6)” [10 (12.5, 15) cm].


Body
Cast on 16 (21, 26) sts at beginning of next 2
rows – 68 (84, 100) sts.
Work in St st for 4 rows.
Cast on 2 sts at beginning of next 10 rows –
88 (104, 120) sts.
Work until Body measures 3 (3½, 4)” [7.5 (9,
10) cm] from beginning, end with a wrong
side row.


Shape Neck
Mark center 16 sts for Neck.
Next Row (Right Side): K36 (44, 52) sts for Back, join a second ball of A and bind off center 16 sts, knit to end of row for Front – 36 (44, 52) sts each side.
Working both sides at same time with separate balls of yarn, work until Body measures 5 (5½, 6)” [12.5 (14, 15) cm] from beginning, end with a wrong side row.

Center Edge
Cut A and join B.
Knit 4 rows.
Bind off 36 (44, 52) sts for Back.
Working Front sts only, knit 4 more rows.
Bind off.
Mark for 3 buttons evenly spaced with first at Neck edge and last 2” [5cm] from lower edge.


RIGHT SLEEVE
Work as for Left Sleeve until beginning of Neck shaping.

Shape Neck
Mark center 16 sts for Neck.
Next Row (Right Side): K36 (44, 52) sts for Front, join a second ball of A and bind off center 16 sts, knit to end of row for Back – 36 (44, 52) sts each side.
Working both sides at same time with separate balls of yarn, work until Body measures 5 (5½, 6)” [12.5 (14, 15) cm] from beginning, end with a wrong side row.


Center Edge
Cut A and join B.
Knit 4 rows.


Buttonhole Row (Right Side): [Knit to where marked for button, yo, k2tog] 3 times, knit to end of row for Front; knit across Back sts.
Bind off Back sts.
Working Front sts only, knit 3 more rows.
Bind off.


FINISHING
Sew Back Edges together, leaving last 2” [5 cm] at lower edge unsewn. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.

Neckband
With right side facing, join C at Right Front Neck edge, pick up and knit 88 sts around Neck edge, end at Left Front Neck edge.
Knit 3 rows.
Bind off.


Hem
With right side facing, join C at lower edge of Right Back Center Edge, pick up and knit 68 (72, 78) sts along lower edge of Jacket to Front Center Edge.
Knit 3 rows.
Bind off.
With right side facing, join C at lower edge of Left Front Center Edge, pick up and knit 68 (72, 78) sts along lower edge of Jacket to Back Center Edge.
Work as for first Hem.


Spots (Make 12)
With double pointed needles and B, cast on 32 sts. Divide sts evenly around double pointed needles. Join to work in rounds, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
Round 1: Purl.
Round 2: [K2, k2tog] 8 times – 24 sts.
Round 3: Knit.
Round 4: [K1, k2tog] 8 times – 16 sts.
Round 5: Knit.
Round 6: [K2tog] 8 times – 8 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.


Arrange 6 Spots each randomly on Left and Right Sleeves and sew in place.
Weave in ends.

KNIT HAT
With C, cast on 80 (90, 100) sts. Divide sts evenly around double pointed needles. Join to work in rounds, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round. [Purl 1 round. Knit 1 round] twice. Change to A and knit until piece measures 4 (5, 6)” [10 (12.5, 15)cm] from beginning. Cut A and join B.


Shape Crown
Round 1 And All Odd Numbered Rounds: Knit.
Round 2: *K8, k2tog; repeat from * around – 72 (81, 90) sts.
Round 4: *K7, k2tog; repeat from * around – 64 (72, 80) sts.
Round 6: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * around – 56 (63, 70) sts.
Round 8: *K5, k2tog; repeat from * around – 48 (54, 60) sts.
Round 10: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * around – 40 (45, 50) sts.
Round 12: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * around – 32 (36, 40) sts.
Round 14: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * around – 24 (27, 30) sts.
Round 16: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * around – 16 (18, 20) sts.
Round 18: [K2tog] around – 8 (9, 10) sts.
Cut yarn. Thread yarn through sts and pull to gather. Knot to secure.


CROCHET HAT (shown in photo)
With B, ch 2.
Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, slip st in first sc to join – 6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc – 12 sc.
Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, slip st in first sc – 18 sc.
Round 4: Ch 1, [sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, slip st in first sc – 24 sc.
Round 5: Ch 1, [sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, slip st in first sc – 30 sc.
Round 6: Ch 1, [sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, slip st in first sc – 36 sc.
Round 7: Ch 1, [sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, slip st in first sc – 42 sc.
Round 8: Ch 1, [sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, slip st in first sc – 48 sc.
Round 9: Ch 1, [sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, slip st in first sc – 54 sc.

Cut B and join A.
Round 12: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in same st, hdc in next 32 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each st around – 68 sts.
Working in continuous rounds, work in hdc until Hat measures 3½” [9cm] from beginning of A.
Cut A and join C.
Work 2 rounds in sc, slip st to first st to join.
Fasten off.


FINISHING
Weave in ends.


BOOTIES
With A, cast on 28 sts.
Work in St st for 3½” [9 cm] from beginning,
end with a wrong side row.
Cut A and join B. Work 2 rows in St st.

Shape Toe
Row 1 (Right Side): *K2, k2tog; repeat from * across – 21 sts.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * across – 14 sts.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: [K2tog] 7 times – 7 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close. Knot to secure.


FINISHING
Sew 2½” [1.5cm] from Toe closed along edge.


Cuff
With right side facing, join C at last st of first row, pick up and knit 28 sts along edge of Ankle to first st of first row.
Knit 3 rows.
Bind off.


Fold cast-on edge in half and sew closed for back seam.
Using B, embroider a line up the center of foot in chain st. Work French knots randomly on either side of chain sts for ladybug spots.


Weave in ends.

I am about to try something I have never done before. Mix knitting and crocheting. I had made a hat and diaper cover in crochet with these same colors. Then I added a pair of booties. Now I can add a top and have a big set for a baby gift.
