Ornithology Yarn Collection

Ornithology Yarn Collection

Reviewed by Christine Weiher, Editor, AllFreeKnitting.com

Round Mountain Fibers is a boutique fiber-arts studio that has unique hand-dyed yarn inspired by nature. Each skein is hand-dyed which means not a single skein is identical. Their three collections of yarn include Botany (yarn inspired by plants), Entomology (yarn inspired by insects) and Ornithology (yarn inspired by birds). Ornithology is an amazing collection that has colorways that naturally pool and stripe.

The Ornithology collection comes in two bases: Spruce which is 100% superwash merino grown and spun in the U.S. and Willow, which is also 100% superwash merino, but is sourced from Canada. Willow is super squishy and glossy, which makes for an amazing base.

Colorways are inspired by beautiful birds such as hummingbirds, the Atlantic Puffin, The Bee Eater, the Blue Jay, the Bufflehead, as well as the Green Heron and so much more. There are over 20 colors of Ornithology to choose from and each is just as beautiful as the next. Not only are you getting an amazing yarn and yarn color, but working with this yarn also gives you a bit of knowledge about birds and nature, which is kind of neat.

A fingering weight yarn like this is perfect for making garments like scarves, shawls, hats and cowls as well as other dainty items. As you work up your project you'll notice a self-striping pattern emerge, resulting in a stunning, unique piece.
