This square-shaped pillow makes a fun accent piece for a basic chair, couch, or bedroom.

Knitting Needle Size8 or 5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Materials:

  • Mosaic (100 g/3.5 oz;191 m/209 yds); Main Color (MC) Vivid (44420) - 2 Balls
  • Size 5 mm (U.S. 8) knitting needles
  • Size 5 mm (U.S. 8) circular knitting needle 20" [51 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • 14" [35.5 cm] square pillow form

 

GAUGE
18 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st.

 

INSTRUCTIONS


FRONT AND BACK (make 2 pieces alike)
First Square
Cast on 45 sts.
**1st row: (WS). Knit.
2nd row: K21. Sl1. K2tog. psso. Place marker on last st. K21.
3rd row: Purl.
4th row: Knit to 1 st before marked st. Sl1. K2tog. psso. Knit to end of row.
5th row: Knit.
6th row: As 4th row.
Rep 3rd to 6th rows until there are 3 sts.
Next row: (WS). Sl1P. P2tog. psso. Fasten off.**
 

Second Square
With RS facing, pick up and knit 22 sts along one side of cast on edge of First Square to corner. Cast on 23 sts. 45 sts.
Work from ** to ** as given for First Square.
 

Third Square
With RS facing, pick up and knit 22 sts along cast on edge of Second Square. Cast on 23 sts. 45 sts.
Work from ** to ** as given for First Square.
 

Fourth Square
With RS facing, pick up and knit 22 sts along cast on edge of Third Square. Pick up and knit 23 sts along cast on edge of First Square. 45 sts.
Work from ** to ** as given for First Square.
 

Border: With RS facing and circular needle, join yarn to any corner. *Pick up and knit 45 sts along side edge. Place marker on last picked up st (corner marker). Rep from * 3 times more. Place marker on last st. Join to beg working in rnds. 180 sts.
1st rnd: M1. *Knit to marked st. M1. K1 (marked st). M1. Rep from * to last st. M1. K1.
2nd rnd: Purl.
Rep last 2 rnds until Border measures 2" [5 cm], ending on a 1st rnd.
Cast off loosely.
 

FINISHING
Sew 3 side edges of Front and Back tog. Insert pillow form. Sew rem edge closed.

I love retro type knitting patterns, especially for pillows and home decor. This one looks great! Not sure why they specified a Main Color as I don't see it in the instructions anywhere. I guess you just use the self-striping yarn for the whole thing, both the front and back and the border?

this is a highly attractive and colorful cushion a happy addition to a room or sofa - a bit of a challenge but fun to see it develop
