How many pairs of mittens like this did I have as a child! Somehow a hand-knit mitt is ever so much warmer than those thin ones bought in a store -- and these stash-busters are so colorful and cheerful. 4 needles and I have seldom been successful, but for memory's sake, I shall have to try these

My stash of worsted wool is limiting. I am thinking of using regular acrylic yarn to replace some worn out lightweight mittens. This pattern is easy enough to follow for a first pair of mittens. Will they be roomy enough to add a sherling fleece liner?
