The Fantastic Pommed Hat is an easy knit hat pattern you can complete in no time. The unique yarn creates a wonderfully mixable wardrobe addition for cold days. Each ply of the yarn is dyed separately and twisted together to create a truly one-of-a-kind knitted hat pattern. The rolled brim and chunky pom pom add a bit of whimsy to the design. Once the temperature starts to drop, you will surely find yourself reaching for this cute and comfortable hat again and again. The icy blue color is incredibly soothing and lends itself to a variety of outfits in your closet.


Knitting Needle Size15 or 10 mm, 17 or 12.75 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight(7) Jumbo

Gauge7.5 sts = 4" [10 cm]; 10 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch using larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Finished SizeHat circumference at bottom edge: 20 (22)" [51 (56) cm]

Materials List

  • RED HEART® Collage™: 2 balls 9983 Frozen
  • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needles: 10mm [US 15] and 12.75mm [US 17], 16" [40cm] long
  • Susan Bates® Double Pointed Knitting Needles: 12.75mm [US 17]
  • Stitch marker, pompom maker, yarn needle


Directions are for size Small; changes for size Large is in parentheses.


With smaller needle, cast on 34 (38) sts. Join to work in rounds, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
Knit 5 rounds.
Change to larger needles and knit until piece measures approximately 9 (10)" [23 (25.5 cm] from beginning. Change to double pointed needles, dividing sts evenly around.
Decrease Round: [K2tog] around – 17 (19) sts.
Decrease Round: [K2tog] around to last st, k1 – 9 (10) sts.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close. Secure end.


Weave in ends.
Make a large 3½" [9 cm] diameter pompom and attach to top of hat.
