The intermediate knitting pattern is a one-skein design that likely won't take very much time to complete. Bright and colorful as can be, this pattern is a bold design that will also be an amazing addition to your winter gear. You can easily make these mitts as a last-minute gift for family members and friends, too. If you feel your home or office is just too chilly in winter, then this pattern is for you!

Intermediate

Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge18 sts = 4” (10 cm); 22 rows = 4” (10 cm) in St st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge given.

Finished SizeMittens measure 8½" (21.5 cm) long and 10" (25.5 cm) wide before seaming.

  • Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7] 
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

Special Abbreviation

ssk (slip, slip, knit) = slip next two stitches knitwise to right needle, insert point of left needle through front of sts, knit these sts together – 1 st dec.

Mittens (Make 2)

  1. Cast on 38 sts.

  2. Row 1 (right side): Knit across.

  3. Row 2: Knit 5, purl to last 5 sts, Knit 5.

  4. Row 3: Knit 7, * yo, ssk, Knit 4; repeat from * to last 7 sts, yo, ssk, knit 5. 

  5. Row 4: Knit 5, purl to last 5 sts, knit 5.

  6. Row 5: Knit 7, * yo, knit 1, ssk, knit 3; repeat from * to last 7 sts, yo, ssk, knit 5.

  7. Row 6: Knit 5, purl to last 5 sts, knit 5.

  8. Row 7: Knit 7, * yo, knit 2, ssk, knit 2; repeat from * to last 7 sts, yo, ssk, knit 5.

  9. Row 8: Knit 5, purl to last 5 sts, knit 5.

  10. Row 9: Knit 7, * yo, knit 3, ssk, knit 1; repeat from * to last 7 sts, yo, ssk, knit 5. 

  11. Row 10: Knit 5, purl to last 5 sts, knit 5.

  12. Row 11: Knit 7, * yo, knit 4, ssk; repeat from * to last 7 sts, yo, ssk, knit 5.

  13. Row 12: Knit 5, purl to last 5 sts, knit 5

  14. Repeat Rows 3-12 four times. 

  15. Next row: Knit across.

  16. Next row: Knit 5, purl to last 5 sts, knit 5.

  17. Bind off all sts.

Finishing

  1. Fold mitten in half lengthwise. With yarn needle seam sides, ending 2" (5 cm) from one edge. Leave a 1" (2.5 cm) gap for thumb, then seam remaining 1" (2.5 cm) to end. Repeat for second mitten.

  2. Weave in all loose ends.
