Hello, I am having a problem with the Fisherman's Rib. I understand the instructions but after I do row 1, k1, p1 the second row says k1, yo, sl1, how do I k1 when the sec row is a purl row? You don't start it with knit, you start it with purl?

Just follow the directions as they stand knit the first stitch, then yarn over and slip the second stitch, and repeat this sequence to the end of the row - this is knot a stockinette stitch pattern, so no purl rows...
