Once Around Cowl

Intermediate

Knitting Needle Size10 or 6 mm

Yarn Weight(5) Bulky/Chunky (12-15 stitches for 4 inches)

Gauge1 stitches, 2 rows, 3 inches. stockinette stitch

Cowl Measuremets: 9” high x 25” circumference [23 cm x 64 cm]
 

Materials:

  • RED HEART® Heads Up™: 2 balls 872 Royale (available in 3.5 oz (100 g), 187 yd (172 m) balls)
  • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needles: 6.0mm [US 10] 24” [61 cm] long
  • Stitch marker
  • Cable needle
  • Yarn needle

 

GAUGE: 15 sts = 4” [10 cm]; 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Stockinette st. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge

 

Abbreviations:
K = knit
cm = centimeters
mm = millimeters
P = purl
st(s) = stitch(es;
* = repeat whatever follows the * as indicated


Special Stitches:
6-st LC = 3 over 3 Left Cross = Slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold to front, k3, k3 from cable needle.
6-st RC = 3 over 3 Right Cross = Slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold to back, k3, k3 from cable needle.
 

 

STITCH PATTERNS:
Sand Cable Stitch Pattern
Rounds 1-4: Knit.
Round 5: *6-st RC, k6; repeat from * to end.
Rounds 6-9: Knit.
Round 10: *K6, 6-st LC; repeat from * to end.
Repeat Rounds 1–10 for Sand Cable Stitch Pattern.

2x2 Rib Stitch Pattern
Round 1: *Knit 2 sts, purl 2 sts, repeat to end of Round.
Round 2: Knit the knit sts, purl the purl sts to end of Round.
Next Rounds: Repeat Rounds 1-2 for 2x2 Rib Stitch Pattern.


COWL
Cast on 96 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts, place marker for beginning of Round.
Rounds 1-4: Work in 2x2 Rib Stitch pattern as follows: *K2, p2; repeat from * around.
Round 5: Begin Sand Cable Stitch pattern working Rounds 1-10 in pattern until cowl measures 8” [20 cm] from cast on edge.
Repeat Rounds 1-4.
Next Round: Bind off all sts loosely. Fasten off.


FINISHING
Weave in ends. Lightly block into shape
