Baby Frog Hat

Intermediate

Knitting Needle Size9 or 5.5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight(5) Bulky/Chunky (12-15 stitches for 4 inches)

MATERIALS

  • Premier Yarns® Hush (100% polyester; 50gm/88 yds)
    • #40-07 Celery (A) – 1 ball
    • #40-03 Pastel Yellow (B) – 1 ball
  • Premier Yarns® Eversoft (100% acrylic; 85gm/158 yds)
    • #70-34 Black (C) – 1 ball
  • Needle/Hook: US Size 9 (5.5 mm) double pointed needles (dpns) and optional 16” circular or J-10 (6mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, polyester stuffing

 

GAUGE
12 sts x 16 rows = 4” in St st or 10 sc x 11 rows = 4”
Directions: Save time, check your gauge

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Circumference: 14 (18, 20)”
Height: 5 (7, 8)”



PATTERN NOTES
Hats can be knit or crocheted. If desired knit hat in child and adult sizes can be started on 16” circular, switch to dpns during crown when sts no long comfortably fit on circular needle.

HAT

With B, cast on 42 (54, 60) sts.
Place marker (pm) and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: Purl.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rep Rnds 1-2, 2 more times, cut B.
With A, knit even in St st for 4 (5½, 6)”.

Crown
Rnd 1: *K7 (9, 10), pm; rep from * 4 more times, k to end.
Rnd 2: *Knit to 2 before m, k2tog; rep from * 5 more times – 6 sts dec’d.
Rnd 3: Knit.
Rep Rnds 2-3, 4 (5, 6) more times – 18 sts rem.
Rep Rnd 2, 2 more times – 6 sts rem.
Cut yarn and thread through rem sts. Pull snug.

Earflaps (make 2)
With B, cast on 24 sts.
Row 1 (WS): K12, pm, k12. Cut B.
Row 2 (RS): With S, ssk, knit to 2 before m, k2tog, ssk, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog – 4 sts dec’d.
Row 3: Knit.
Rep Rows 2-3, 3 more times – 8 sts rem.
Rep Row 2, 1 more times – 4 sts rem.
Cut yarn and thread through rem sts. Pull snug.

Eyes (make 2)
Back

With A and dpns, cast on 3 sts.
Row 1: [Kfb] 3 times – 6 sts.
Pm and join to work in the round.
Rnd 1: [Kfb] 6 times – 12 sts.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: * Kfb, k1; rep from * 5 times – 18 sts.
Rnd 4: Bind off 4 sts, knit to end – 14 sts.
Begin working back and forth on 14 sts.
Knit 2 rows. Cut A.

Front
Row 1: With B, knit to end, cast on 4 sts – 18 sts.
Pm and join to work in the round.
Rnd 1: *K2tog, k1; rep from * 5 times – 12 sts.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: [K2tog] 6 times – 6 sts.
Cut yarn and thread through rem sts. Pull snug.

Finishing
Sew Earflaps to bottom edges of Hat, on opposite sides, slightly closer to the back of the hat.

With C, embroider pupils onto eyes.
Place small amount of stuffing in eyes, sew to top of hat.

With C, embroider facial features onto hat using photo as a guide.
Weave in ends.

Tassels (make 2)
Cut 3, 9” long pieces of A.
Cut 2, 9” long pieces of B.
Fold in half. Using crochet hook pass fold through tip of Earflap from back to front. Pass ends through fold and pull snug.
