I love making pot holders. You can try different patterns and stitches and come away with something useful which does not take long. I would buy three balls of each of the colors. That way I can make more than one potholder and change the color sequence up a bit. You always need more than one potholder. This yarn is usually on sale. The potholders wash up well. Thanks for the pattern.

Hmmm....I agree, how do you knit with 3 strands of one color if you only need one ball of that color of yarn? Do you divide the yarn into thirds?

Well, I know this is too late to help you but maybe it will help someone else. Yes, you are exactly right, you will have to divide the skein of yarn into thirds. So roll a small ball of the yarn, then roll another small ball, and use those two with the remainder of the skein to make your three strands.
