Flat Knit Swirl Hat

The Flat Knit Swirl Hat is a medium weight knit hat perfect for fall days. The swirl patterns adds a nice amount of visual interest and the tweed colors are perfect for crisp days. This is a relatively easy hat to knit as long as you keep track of the rows. The free hat pattern is knit on straight needles, side by side. The increases and decreases at the ends create a horizontal shape. When you bring the ends together and sew the seam, a swirl pattern is created. The stitches are then picked up on either straight, circular, or double point needles to knit the brim. Have fun knitting this beautiful pattern with a slightly unexpected twist.

I really like this hat. It has a nice detail and is not hard at all. It should knit up quickly and it will be warm. I have been making hats for friends and I know this one will be popular. Thank you for the pattern.

This hat is definitely a unique knit and I really love how the self striping yarn stands out in the stitch pattern. This is the type of pattern that keeps you interested , and there are many self striping yarns on the market right now, so you could make a bunch in different colors. This would also make a great gift.

This is not a free pattern.

Hi glassylassy 149482 6, we just confirmed this is a free pattern. If you click the green link above that says, "Click here for knitting pattern," you will be taken to the designer's blog. Scroll down to the bottom of the blog post and you will find the full pattern instructions. Hope this helps! -Editors of AllFreeKnitting

I love this design and am excited to try it, but I cannot spot anywhere that says how many skeins of this yarn it takes. Is it just one? Thank you!

Hi Elaineartist, we suggest leaving a comment for the pattern designer on her blog post to know for sure how many skeins the hat requires. However, our best guess is two skeins (assuming 144 yards per skein), because you might just run out of one skein before completing the hat. Hope this helps! -Editors of AllFreeKnitting

the designer doesn't actually say in the materials list, but if you scroll further down on the page she does say in the comments that it is only 1 skein.

This is a really unique pattern. I've never knit a hat flat before (knitting round and avoiding seaming just always seemed easier), but I think I want to give this one a try.

This is not your typical hat pattern. The swirl look is interesting but it's really the colorful yarn used by the designer that makes it work. I'm not that excited by having to pick up 108 stitches along the bottom to knit the ribbing as well as seam up the back.
