Autumn Knitting Season: Celebrate with 27 Knit Hat Patterns

Marigold Slouch BeanieFor knitters, autumn is the kick-off season for cold weather knitting. Gone are the days of sitting with a sweaty pile of yarn trapping all of summer’s heat in a square foot radius on your lap. Gone are the days of trying (unsuccessfully) to explain to curious passerby why you are knitting a blanket in the middle of July. That’s right. It’s autumn, and cold weather is here to stay. From now on, your knitting needles no longer look out of place. The cool air works with your stitches, rather than the humid air that worked against it. It’s finally fall, and there are so many things to knit in celebration.

One of my favorite ways to begin knitting season is with a few knit hat patterns. Not only are knit hats cozy accessories for fall, they’re also a great way to use up the extra yarn from your summer projects. There are so many fun ways to get creative with knit hat patterns simply because there are so many of them.  I also make it a personal goal of mine to knit a few hats for charity every autumn. There are so many cold noggins that are in need of a warm knit hat. They’re too easy and quick not to make a ton.

To celebrate the beginning of knitting season, we’ve selected 27 patterns for your knitting pleasure. We’ve collected loose fitting beanies, cable knit caps, fitted hats, hats with ribbing, striped hats, and so many more. Whether you’re knitting for yourself of someone in need, you’re sure to find the perfect autumn knit hat pattern somewhere in this collection.

Slouchy Knit Hat Patterns

Every so often I’m looking for a streamlined, polished look; most of the time, I love baggy, slouchy, loose fitting hats. I love slouchy hats for a number of reasons. First of all, I have extremely curly hair that almost never does what I want it to do. Having a big, cushy hat that I can pile my mane in is an absolute must. Secondly, when my hair is cooperating, a slouchy hat won’t mess it up. The looser fit will dash any fears of hat hair or kinks. Lastly, I love the casual, inviting vibe that slouchy hats give. There’s something about a looser fitting hat that makes you look friendly and down to earth.

Fitted Knit Hat Patterns

I opt for a fitted knit hat pattern when I’m going for absolute comfort. Fitted hats are great for football games, farmers’ markets, and any other activity that takes place outdoors. Fitted hats hug your head and offer your ears warmth and cushioning, making it easier to spend a day outside in cold, windy weather. Fitted hats are also a great option to get rid of extra yarn because they use less material than a bigger, looser fitting hat.

Cable Knit Hat Patterns

For a classic look, I always go for cable knit hat patterns. Cable knitting is a traditional, timeless look that reminds me of hot cocoa, warm socks, and everything cozy. These cable knit hat patterns are festive and instantly add a special textural touch to whatever you’re wearing.
