row 1 after the cast on of 40 stitches is that to be a stockinette stitch or ? for 18 rows and then knit 2 tog knit 5 is this a repeat across this row of knit 2 tog knit 5 or ? kindly explain for a fairly new knitter

The pattern actually states pretty clearly that you stst (stocking stitch) for 18 rows and when there is one set of directions it is always a repeat. this is a great pattern-I've made and entire pumpkin patch and sit my knitted witch on top for the indoor halloween display! the grandkids love it! I do find some of them in random places after halloween though!
