Gauge1 stitches, 2 rows, 3 inches. stockinette stitch

Materials:
Bernat® Happy™ (85 g / 3 oz; 90 yds/82 m) Contrast A Sweet Peas (81223) - 1 ball [6-12 mos] 2 ball [18-24 mos]
Bernat® Softee® Baby™ (5 oz/140 g; 362 yds/331 m) Contrast B Little Mouse (30010) - 1 ball
Set of four sizes U.S. 6 (4 mm) and U.S. 10½ (6.5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.
Stitch marker

GAUGE:
22 sts and 30 rows = 4" [10 cm] with smaller needles and Bernat® Softee® Baby™ in stocking st.
11 sts and 16 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles and Bernat ® Happy™ in stocking st.

Measurements: To fit baby head sizes 6-12 mos (18-24 mos)

Instructions:

Outer Hat: Beg at top, with B and smaller double-pointed needles, cast on 4 sts.
1st rnd: Kfb in each st. 8 sts. Divide sts on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
2nd rnd: Kfb in each st around. 16 sts.
3rd rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around.
4th rnd: *P1. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. P1. K1. Rep from * around. 24 sts.
5th rnd: As 3rd rnd.
6th rnd: *P1. K1. P1. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. P1. K1. Rep from * around. 32 sts. Seed St Pat is now in position.
7th and alt rnds: As 3rd rnd.
8th rnd: *P1. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. (P1. K1) 3 times. Rep from * around. 40 sts.
10th rnd: *P1. (K1. P1) twice. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. (P1. K1) twice. Rep from * around. 48 sts.
12th rnd: *P1. K1. P1. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. (P1. K1) 4 times. Rep from * around. 56 sts.
14th rnd: *P1. (K1. P1) 3 times. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. (P1. K1) 3 times. Rep from * around. 64 sts.
16th rnd: *P1. (K1. P1) 4 times. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. (P1. K1) 3 times. Rep from * around. 72 sts.
18th rnd: *P1. (K1. P1) 4 (2) times. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. (P1. K1) 4 (3) times. Rep from * around. 80 (84) sts.

Cont even in Seed St Pat until work from beg measures 7 (7¼)" [18 (18.5) cm].

Divide for Flaps: Next rnd: Cast off 16 (18) sts (center back). Pat across next 20 sts for First Ear Flap. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Working back and forth across 2 needles in rows, proceed as follows:
Work 7 rows even in Seed St Pat.
Dec 1 st each end of next and every following alt row 4 times more. Cast off rem 10 sts.

With RS facing, join B to rem sts. Pat across next 24 (26) sts for Front Flap. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Work 5 rows even in Seed St Pat.
Dec 1 st each end of next row and every following 4th row twice more. Cast off rem 18 (20) sts.
With RS facing, join B to rem sts. Pat across next 20 sts for Second Ear Flap. Work as for First Ear Flap.

Hat Lining: Beg at top, with A and larger double-pointed needles, cast on 4 sts.
1st rnd: Kfb in each st. 8 sts. Divide sts on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
2nd rnd: Kfb in each st around. 16 sts.
3rd and alt rnds: Knit.
4th rnd: *K1. Kfb. Rep from * around. 24 sts.
6th rnd: *K2. Kfb. Rep from * around. 32 sts.
8th rnd: *K3. Kfb. Rep from * around. 40 sts.
10th rnd: *K4. Kfb. Rep from * around. 48 sts.

Size 18-24 mos only: 12th rnd: *K15. Kfb. Rep from * around. 51 sts.

Both sizes: Knit even in rnds until work from beg measures 7 (7¼)" [18 (18.5) cm].

Divide for Flaps: Next rnd: Cast off 9 (10) sts (center back). K12 for First Ear Flap. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Working back and forth across 2 needles in rows, proceed as follows:
Work 3 rows even.
Dec 1 st each end of next and every following alt row 3 times more. Cast off rem 4 sts.
With RS facing, join A to rem sts. K 15 (17) for Front Flap. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.

Work 5 rows even.
Dec 1 st each end of next and following alt row.
Cast off rem 11 (13) sts.
With RS facing, join A to rem sts. K12 for Second Ear Flap. Work as for First Ear Flap.


FINISHING
Place WS of Lining inside Outer Hat, matching Ear Flaps and Front Flap, noting Lining will be slightly larger than Outer Hat. With B, sew Lining to outer edges of Outer Hat, allowing Lining to roll beyond edge. Fold Front Flap up and stitch corners in position to secure. Stitch through all layers at top of Hat to secure Lining.
