Beginner

Knitting Needle Size6 or 4 mm

Yarn Weight(3) Light/DK (21-24 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st

Finished SizeTo fit preemie baby's head

Materials List

  • Bernat Softee Baby (Solids 140 g/5 oz OR Ombres 120 g/4.42 oz) - 1 ball
  • Size 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge

Pattern

Starting + Body of Hat:

CO 58 sts.
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows of stocking st for 8 ins [19 cm], ending with a purl row.

Finishing:

Bind off.
Sew back seam, reversing bottom 1.5 ins [4 cm] for roll back.
Sew top seam. Fold 2 top corners tog and sew at center of top seam.
Roll bottom edge to desired depth of Hat.

I knit this in the round on size US-3 dpns with #3 weight soft baby yarn, knitting all rows, sewing only the top seam, and then folding and sewing the top corners as instructed.

Seems strange that this isn't done in the round...a seam would be uncomfortable for the sensitive, fragile preemies. I would definitely do this in the round.
