Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge20 stitches, 26 rows, 4 inches. stocking stitch

Materials:
Solid Version

  • Lily® Sugar’n Cream® (70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) Red (00095) or Mod Green (01223) or Hot Green (01712) or Hot Pink (01740) 1 ball (23 m/25 yds)
  • Note: 1 ball makes approx 4 Trees.
  • Solid Version only: Rick-rack trim, ribbon, sequins and buttons for embellishments.
  • Size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Length of Satin ribbon for hanging loop
  • Star shaped buttons.
Striped Version
  • Lily® Sugar’n Cream® (70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) Contrast A Hot Green (01712) or Red (00095) or Mod Green (01223) 1 ball (12 m/13 yds)
  • Lily® Sugar’n Cream® (70.9 g/2.5 oz; 109 m/120 yds) Contrast B Hot Pink (01740) or White (00001) or Hot Green (01712) 1 ball (12 m/13 yds)
  • Note: 1 ball each of A and B makes approx 8 Trees.
  • Size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Length of Satin ribbon for hanging loop
  • Star shaped buttons.
Measurements: Approx 3½" [9 cm] wide x 6" [15 cm] tall.

Instructions:

Solid Version

  1. Tree (make 2)
    Cast on 18 sts.

  2. 1st row: (RS). Knit.

  3. 2nd row: Purl.

  4. 3rd row: K1. ssk. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.

  5. 4th row: As 2nd row.

  6. Rep last 4 rows to 4 sts.

  7. Next row: Purl.

  8. Next row: ssk. K2tog.

  9. Next row: P2tog.
    Break yarn, pull through rem loop and fasten securely.

  10. Stem
    Cast on 4 sts.

  11. Knit 5 rows (garter st). Cast off.

Striped Version

  1. Tree (make 2)
    Work as given for Solid Version, working in Stripe Pat as follows:

  2. Work 4 rows in A.

  3. Work 4 rows in B.

  4. These 8 rows form Stripe Pat.

  5. Stem
    With B, work as given for Solid Version.

  6. Finishing
    With WS tog, sew around side and bottom edges of Tree. Sew Trunk to bottom edge of Tree as shown in picture. Sew star shaped button to point and attach ribbon for hanging loop as shown in picture.

Solid Version only: Embellish Tree with your choice of buttons, sequins, ribbon or rick-rack trim.
