on your crossover knit top on pages 8-12 the yarn needed is no longer available and I am not sure what cost efficient yarn I can substitute

I am having a problem with the instructions for the Eyelet knit top, row 5. Can someone please clarify this for me? Between the *s, I read it K1, yo (as if to purl), sl1, K1, psso, the P3, which to me assumes you bring the yarn fwd for the next P3. I do this and the pattern is not working but it does up through row 4. Help! Thanks!
