Materials List

  • Size 12mm knitting needles, one pair
  • Worsted weight yarn, approx. 50 grams total, worked 4 strands
  • Small amount of fun yarn, approx. 10 yards
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

Instructions

  1. Working with 4 strands of worsted weight yarn, cast on:

    • Newborn: 10 stitches
    • 3 to 6 months: 14 stitches
    • 6 to 12 months: 16 stitches
    • 1 to 3 years: 18 stitches
    • 3 to 5 years: 18 stitches
    • 5 to 8 years: 18 stitches
    • 8 to 12 years: 20 stitches
    • Adult: 22 stitches

  2. Knit every row until the rectangle measures:

    • Newborn: 12 inches
    • 3 to 6 months: 15 inches
    • 6 to 12 months: 18 inches
    • 1 to 3 years: 20 inches
    • 3 to 5 years: 21 inches
    • 5 to 8 years: 22 inches
    • 8 to 12 years: 23 inches
    • Adult: 24 inches

  3.  Cast off with 15-inch yarn ends. Fold the rectangle in half, (to form somewhat of a square shape), and sew up the back seam of the hood.

  4. Turn the work right side out. Thread a length of fun yarn into a yarn needle, and pass through a row of stitches at the front of the hat. (This design passed the fun yarn through the second row in.)

  5. Secure the fun yarn on each side of the hat with several stitches. (The fun yarn is not functional, it is purely for
    decorative purposes.)

  6. Make 3 tassels (see below). Attach one to the top point of the hat, and one on each bottom front corner of the hat.

How to Make a Tassel

  1. Wrap yarn around 4 fingers, approx. 20 times.

  2. Tie the bundle together securely.

  3. Tie another length of yarn around the tassel, to form a ball at the top.

  4. Pull the ends of the knotted yarn through to the center of the tassel.

  5. Trim the ends.

  6. Use the two strands of yarn remaining to tie the tassel onto your work.

  7. Weave the yarn ends into the finished work.

I made this for my 96 year old MIL who asked for a bonnet she could tie under her chin. The 4 strands on 12mm was far to tight and didn't look very nice, I changed to 15 mm with 4 strands of bernat satin yarn and it took less than 2 hours to make. I also picked up 3 stitches in each front corner to make icord ties, skipped the tassels entirely, they would just make an already bulky hat look ridiculously bulky.

This is such a super easy pattern and I love the fact that you can make so many sizes from it. It is a great hat to knit when learning to knit with multiple strands and larger needles. As the yarn is so bulky it makes it very cosy and super quick to make. Plus using a number of strands means that you can match a variety of different colours together to make an accessory to go with all outfits.

The pop up to join is very frustrating. I can't even change pages without it popping up.

How do I print the pattern???

Hi sewaneeseniorcenter, To print, please try this: Go to the page and highlight the text, then right-click on it. You'll get a window that gives you the option to "copy." Do that, and then paste the text into a word document. You should be able print that document that way.

Or, you can highlight the text for the pattern, right click, and choose "Print" from the menu. That should automatically open the the print dialogue box.

You actually don't have to highlight anything, with the page open, right click, scroll down to print and only print the pages with the pattern on them.
