Varsity Stripes Scarf and Hat

The Varsity Stripes Scarf and Hat is a perfect knit accessory combo. Stay warm this fall and winter and look stylish with this striped knit hat and scarf duo. Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Materials List

  • Caron® United™(4 oz/113 g; 235 yds/215 m)
  • Main Color (MC) Soft Grey Heather (06004), 2 balls for the scarf, 1 ball for the hat
  • Contrast A Burgundy (06009), 2 balls for the scarf, 1 ball for the hat
  • Stitch marker

Gauge

17 sts and 23 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Garter Rib Pat.

Measurements

Scarf: Approx 8½" x 68" [21.5 x 173 cm] (excluding fringe). Hat: 2 sizes to fit Woman (Man)

  1. Garter Rib Pat
    1st rnd: Knit.
    2nd rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
    Rep 1st and 2nd rnds for Garter Rib Pat.
    Stripe Pat
    1st to 8th rnds: MC.
    9th to 12th rnds: A.
    13th and 14th rnds: MC.
    15th and 16th rnds: A.
    17th to 20th rnds: MC.
    21st to 28th rnds: A.
    29th to 32nd rnds: MC.
    33rd and 34th rnds: A.
    35th and 36th rnds: MC.
    37th to 40th rnds: A.
    These 40 rnds form Stripe Pat.

  2. SCARF
    Note: Scarf is worked in the rnd as a tube. Do not break yarn when changing colors. Carry yarn not in use on inside of Scarf.
    With MC and circular needle, cast on 72 sts. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
    Proceed in Garter Rib Pat for 11 repeats of Stripe Pat.
    Work 1st to 28th rnds of Stripe Pat. Cast off with A. Weave in ends.

  3. Fringe: Cut lengths of MC and A 16" [40.5 cm] long. Taking 5 strands tog, knot into fringe evenly along cast on and cast off edges (matching colors to stripe as shown) through all thicknesses to close tube. Trim fringe evenly.

  4. HAT
    The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ). When only one number is given, it applies to both sizes.
    With circular needle and MC, cast on 80 (88) sts. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
    1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
    Rep last rnd for 4½" [11.5 cm].
    Proceed in Garter Rib Pat for 40 rnds of Stripe Pat. Break A. Work remainder of Hat with MC only.
    Note: Change to set of 4 double-pointed needles when necessary.
    Shape top: 1st rnd: *K2. K2tog. Rep from * around. 60 (66) sts.
    2nd rnd: *K2. P1. Rep from * around.
    3rd rnd: *K2tog. K1. Rep from * around. 40 (44) sts.
    4th rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around.
    5th rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around.
    20 (22) sts.
    6th rnd: Knit.
    7th rnd: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 10 (11) sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through tapestry needle and draw tightly through rem sts. Fasten securely. Weave in ends.

  5. Pompom: Wind MC around 4 fingers 60 times, then wind A around 60 times to create a pompom half MC and half A.
    Tie tightly in the middle and leave a long end for attaching to top of Hat. Cut loops at both ends and trim to form pompom. Sew to top of Hat.
