How to Knit the Twisted Loop Cast On

The twisted loop cast on is an easy stretchy cast on that's easy to master!

The twisted loop cast on is a great example of a stretchy cast on that's not too stretchy. The subtle twist in this cast on makes it great for things like top-down socks or even a neckline -- anything that requires a little bit of flexibility and durability in the edge.

I'll be honest, as I was learning this one, I thought that it was just too weird to really be worth it. However, after I worked it a few times and got into a good rhythm with it, I was able to cast on really quickly. I think if I committed to this cast on, it could easily become a personal favorite.

If you're the type of knitter who has tried the knit on cast on and the longtail cast on and just can't quite get the hang of them, I definitely recommend giving this one a try. It's a good alternative that's straightforward, and it works with just about any type of project!

Step 1

Start by making a slip knot.

Step 2

With the needle in your left hand, grab your working yarn with your lower three fingers of your right hand.

Step 3

Bring your thumb over the top of the working yarn and bring it under, looping the yarn around your thumb.

Step 4

Next, you will bring the yarn over your index finger. Your fingers should now look like this:

Step 5

Turn your index finger so it is pointing away from you, creating a sort of cross with the yarn.

Step 6

Bend your index finger and bring it under the cross of the yarn.

Step 7

Slip the loop from your finger to the needle and tighten.
