Not only would these keep a newborn's hands warm, but knit in a finer yarn with eyelets around a row near the opening, then threaded with ribbon or a crocheted string, these mittens would prevent a newborn from scratching his/her face -- a really great gift to the expectant mother (but don't stop at one pair)
