Knitting Needle Size: 10.5 or 6.5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight: (5) Bulky/Chunky (12-15 stitches for 4 inches)



  • 2 3Y2oz/1OOg skeins
  • (each approx 151yd/138m) of Red Heart Boutique Treasure (acrylic/wool)  in
  • #1901 mosaic OR #1907 portrait a
  • Size 1OY2 (6.5mm) circular needle, 16"/40cm long, or size to obtain gauge
  • One set (5) size 1OY2 (6.5mm) double-pointed needles (dpns)
  • Stitch marker
  • Pompom maker (optional)

Adult Medium

   • Brim circumference 20"/51cm
   • Length 10"/25.5cm

17 sts and 22 rnds = 4"/1Ocm over St st using size 1OY2 (6.5mm) needles.
Take time to check gauge.

KFB Knit into the front and back of next st-1 st increased.

K1, P1  RIB
(over an even number of sts) RND 1 *K1, p1: rep from * to end. Rep rnd 1 for k1, p1 rib.

Change to dpns when there are too few sts to fit comfort­ ably on circular needle.

With circular needle, cast on 80 sts.
Join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts, and place marker (pm) for beg of rnd.
Work in k1, p1 rib for 3"/7.5cm.
NEXT (INC) RND *K9, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd-88 sts.
Cont in St st (knit every rnd) until hat measures 7"/18cm from beg.

RND 1 *K9, k2tog; rep from *to end of rnd-80 sts.
RND 3 *K8, ssk; rep from * to end of rnd-72 sts.
RND 5 *K7, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd-64 sts.
RND 7 *K6, ssk; rep from*  to end of rnd-56  sts.
RND 9 *K5, k2tog; rep from *to end of rnd-48  sts.
RND 11  *K4, ssk; rep from*  to end of rnd-40 sts.
RND 13 *K3, k2tog; rep from *to end of rnd-32 sts.
RND 15 *K2, ssk; rep from* to end of rnd-24 sts.
RND 17 *K1, k2tog; rep from *to end of rnd-16 sts.
RND 18 *K2tog; rep from *to end of rnd-8 sts.
Break yarn, leaving a long tail.
Thread tail through rem sts and pull tightly to secure.

Make pompom 3-4•17.5-1Ocm in diameter. Sew to top of hat. Block lightly to measurements.
