Winter's Wave Hat Pattern
This hat pattern uses bulky yarn, so it works up in just a few hours!
This super easy hat knitting pattern is great for beginners who still want a warm and stylish hat to call their own handmade creation.
For those super chilly winter days, it's important to have a hat that's extra warm. That's why this pattern uses super bulky yarn paired with needles that are slightly smaller than typically required for a yarn of that weight.
This creates a dense fabric that will keep your head warm as well as super secure ribbing at the bottom. Switching to a larger needle size for the remainder of the hat gives this pattern a nice drape, too!
Knitting Needle Size11 or 8 mm, 8 or 5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)
Yarn Weight(6) Super Bulky/Super Chunky (4-11 stitches for 4 inches)

- Weight 6 Yarn | Charisma™ Tweed Yarn by Loops & Threads ® (Note: While this yarn is stated to be #5 Bulky weight, it measures according to gauge as #6 Super Bulky)
- Size 8 circular knitting needles, 16"
- Size 11 circular knitting needles, 16#
- Size 11 DPNs
- Tapestry needle
Pattern
CO 60 sts on the size 8 circular needles. Join in the round.
Rnds 1-6: (K1, p1), repeat ( ) around.
Switch to the size 11 circular needles. (See note below.)
Rnds 7-10: K all sts
Rnd 11: P all sts
Rnds 12-13: K all sts
Rnd 14: P all sts
Rnds 15-17: K all sts
Rnd 18: P all sts
Rnds 19-23: K all sts
Rnd 24: P all sts
Rnds 25-28: K all sts
Move stitches evenly onto 4 DPNs to begin decreasing.
Rnd 29: (K6, cdd, k6), repeat ( ) around. See note below on how to work the CDD (centered double decrease).
Rnd 30-31: K all sts
Rnd 32: (K5, cdd, k5), repeat ( ) around.
Rnd 33: P all sts
Rnd 34: K all sts
Rnd 35: (K4, cdd, k4), repeat ( ) around.
Rnd 36: K all sts
Rnd 37: (K3, cdd, k3), repeat ( ) around.
Rnd 38: (K2, cdd, k2), repeat ( ) around.
Rnd 39: (K1, cdd, k1), repeat ( ) around.
Rnd 40: Cdd 4 times.
Cut a tail of yarn about 4 inches long. Thread the tail through your tapestry needle and pull through the 4 remaining stitches.
Weave in all ends.
Notes
On Switching to a Larger Size Needle:
When switching to a larger size of circular knitting needle after the ribbing, your tension is going to be sort of tight at first, no matter what. However, if you happen to be using an interchangeable knitting needle set, we recommend changing the right needle first and keeping the left needle the same size for one round. This will make the transition to the bigger needles much less painful; once you've done a round with the mismatched needle sizes, you can switch the left needle to the bigger size and continue knitting around.
How to Work a Centered Double Decrease:
- Slip two stitches together knitwise
- Knit 1
- Pass both of the slipped stitches over the knitted stitch
