Materials List

  • RED HEART® Grande Metallic™: 1 ball 1115 Straw
  • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needles: 15 mm [19 US] 16” [41 cm] long
  • Yarn needle, stitch marker

Hat

With circular needles, cast on 30 (36) sts. Place marker, join being careful not to twist sts.
Rounds 1-12 (14): Knit until hat measures 5 (6)” [13 (15) cm] from cast on edge.

Shape Crown

Round 1 (decrease): K4, k2tog around—25 (30) sts.
Rounds 2 and all even numbered Rounds: Knit.
Round 3 (decrease): K3, k2tog around—20 (24) sts.
Round 5 (decrease): K2, k2tog around—15 (18) sts.
Round 7 (decrease for size 18.5” [47 cm]): K1, k2tog around—10 sts.
Round 7 (decrease for size 22” [56 cm]): K2tog around—9 sts.

Finishing

Cut yarn leaving a tail 8” [15 cm] long. With yarn needle, draw tail through remaining sts twice, pull tightly and fasten off. Weave in ends. Block lightly and roll up brim 1” [2.5 cm].

This hat looks like it would be very easy to make. It uses very bulky yarn so it should work up quickly. The edge of the hat rolls up and there is no band to make. Instructions are available in two sizes if you have a larger head or maybe need to make one of these for the guys.

I love the rolled brim on this hat, and the large stitches. I like it in the solid and I'm also wondering how it would look with a variegated yarn. Using a variegated yarn makes it more versatile because it would go with different colored coats - that might be nice for a charity knitting project.

This hat has a classic look to it - and a bit of a brim to it, one day there will be a pattern with the brim I want, maybe even a fedora style? Simplicity and class go hand in hand - have to knit it - in this colour and would like to see it in a rich brown to contrast with my suede coat.. one of these days I am going to be found buried under a mountain of yarn and needles trying to decide which project to work on ...
