  • Patons® Classic Wool Worsted™ (3.5 oz/100 g; 210 yds /192 m) - Navy (77110) - XS/S/M (10 balls), L/XL/2XL (11 balls), 3/4/5XL (12 balls)
  • Size U.S. 6 (4 mm) circular knitting needle 24" [61 cm] and 40" [101.5 cm] long
  • Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needle 40" [101.5 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Spare needle
  • Stitch marker

Note: Poncho can be worn with either Piece A or Piece B as Front or Back.

Piece A

Note: Piece A is worked side to side.
With smaller, longer needle, cast on 109 (125-133) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows twice more.

Change to larger needle and proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). (K1. P1) twice. K1. P3. *K5. P3. Rep from * to last 5 sts. K1. (P1. K1) twice.
2nd row: (P1. K1) twice. P1. K3. *P5. K3. Rep from * to last 5 sts. P1. (K1. P1) twice.
Rep last 2 rows for pat until work from beg measures approx 25 (27-28" [63.5 (68.5-71) cm], ending on a WS row.

Shape left neck:
1st row: (RS). Cast off 4 sts. Pat to end of row.
2nd row: Work even in pat.
3rd row: K2tog. Pat to end of row.
4th row: Work even in pat.
Rep 3rd and 4th rows 5 times more. 99 (115-123) sts.
Cont even in pat until work from beg measures approx 30 (32-33" [76 (81.5-84) cm], ending on a WS row.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). P2. K5. *P3. K5. Rep from * to last 4 sts. (P1. K1) twice.
2nd row: (P1. K1) twice. P5. *K3. P5. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
Rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures approx 33 (35-36" [84 (89-91.5) cm] ending on a WS row.

Shape right neck:

Piece B

Note: Piece B is worked from bottom up.

With smaller, longer needle, cast on 291 (311-321) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needles in rows, proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows twice more.

Change to larger needle and proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). (K1. P1) twice. K5. P3. *K7. P3. Rep from * to last 9 sts. K5. (P1. K1) twice.
2nd row: (P1. K1) twice. P5. K3. *P7. K3. Rep from * to last 9 sts. P5. (K1. P1) twice.
Rep last 2 rows for pat until work from beg measures approx 11 (12½- 23¼" [28 (32-59) cm], ending on a WS row.

Proceed as follow:
1st row: (RS). (K1. P1) twice. P3. *K7. P3. Rep from * to last 4 sts. (P1. K1) twice.
2nd row: (P1. K1) twice. K3. *P7. K3. Rep from * to last 4 sts. (K1. P1) twice.
Rep last 2 rows for pat until work from beg measures 20 (23-24½)" [51 (58.5-62) cm], ending on a WS row.

Divide for neck: Next row: (RS).
Pat across 130 (140-145) sts and leave on spare needle. Cast off 31 sts. Pat to end of row.
Shape Right neck: Keeping cont of pat, dec 1 st at neck edge on next 10 rows. 120 (130-135) sts rem.
Cont even in pat until Piece B measures same length as Piece A, ending on a WS row.
Cast off.

Shape left neck: With WS facing, rejoin yarn to rem 130 (140-145) sts on spare needle.
Keeping cont of pat, dec 1 st at neck edge on next 10 rows. 120 (130- 135) sts rem.

Cont even in pat until Piece B measures same length as Piece A, ending on a WS row.
Cast off.

Finishing

Block Pieces A and B to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth leaving cloth to dry.

Place markers at top edge of Pieces 4" [10 cm] and 14" [35.5 cm] in from each side edge. With WS facing each other, sew Pieces tog at top edge leaving areas between markers open.

Neckband: With RS facing, smaller, shorter circular needle and beg at left shoulder seam, pick up and knit 120 sts evenly around neck edge. Join in rnd, placing marker at first st.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around. Rep last rnd (K2. P2) ribbing for 2" [5 cm]. Cast off in ribbing.
