Directions are for child size 4; changes for sizes 6-6X and 8-10 are in parentheses.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATION
M1 = Make 1 stitch. Insert the left needle from front to back under the horizontal strand that runs between the st on the right needle and the st on the left needle. Insert the right needle under this strand through the back loop. Knit through the back of the strand to twist the new st and prevent a hole–1 st inc.

Poncho

Cast on 80 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts, and place marker for beginning of round.
Knit 5 rounds.
Round 1: *K2tog, YO; repeat from * around.
Rounds 2-3: Knit around.
Round 4: K1, *K2tog, YO; repeat from * to last st, K1.
Rounds 5-7: Knit around.
Round 8: *K8, M1; repeat from * around—90 sts.
Round 9: Knit around.
Rounds 10-16: Repeat Rounds 1-7.
Round 17: *K9, M1; repeat from * around—100 sts.
Round 18: Knit around.

Sizes 6-6X and 8-10 only
Rounds 19-25: Repeat Rounds 1-7.
Round 26: *K10, M1; repeat from * around—110 sts.
Round 27: Knit around.

Size 8-10 only
Rounds 28-34: Repeat Rounds 1-7.
Round 35: *K11, M1; repeat from * around—120 sts.
Round 36: Knit around.
Rounds 37-43: Repeat Rounds 1-7.
Round 44: *K12, M1; repeat from * around—130 sts.

Round 46: *K2tog, YO; repeat from * around.
Rounds 47-48: Knit around.

Rounds 50-54: Knit around.
Repeat Rounds 46-54 until work measures 10 (11, 12)” [25 (28, 30) cm] from cast on edge.
