Gauge7.5 sts = 4" [10 cm]; 10 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch using larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

  • Susan Bates® Circular Knitting Needles: 10mm [US 15] and 12.75mm [US 17], 16" [40cm] long
  • Susan Bates® Double Pointed Knitting Needles: 12.75mm [US 17]
  • Stitch marker, pompom maker, yarn needle

Instructions

Directions are for size Small; changes for size Large is in parentheses.

Hat

With smaller needle, cast on 34 (38) sts. Join to work in rounds, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.
Knit 5 rounds.
Change to larger needles and knit until piece measures approximately 9 (10)" [23 (25.5 cm] from beginning. Change to double pointed needles, dividing sts evenly around.
Decrease Round: [K2tog] around – 17 (19) sts.
Decrease Round: [K2tog] around to last st, k1 – 9 (10) sts.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close. Secure end.

Finishing

Weave in ends.
Make a large 3½" [9 cm] diameter pompom and attach to top of hat.
