  • US size 7 (4.5mm) 16" circular needle

Notes

  1. GS (Gathered Stitch): Insert right-hand needle underneath all 5 slipped yarns from bottom to top. K through next st on needle and pass the needle back through and underneath the 5 slipped yarns. This is not an inc.

  2. Tam is worked in the rnd from the bottom up on a circular needle until the crown, then continues to end on dpn.

Hat

CO 72 (80, 92) sts using size 7 circular needle. Pm and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist work.

Work in seed st as follows:

Rnd 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st.
Rnd 2: *P1, k1; rep from * to last st.

Rep Rnds 1-2 six more times. Change to size 8 circular needle.

Rnd 15: Work 2 (2, 4) sts in pat, M1, *work 4 (4, 5) sts in pat, M1; rep from * to last 2 (2, 3) sts, work in pat to end—90 (100, 110) sts.
Rnd 16: K
Rnd 17: *K5, sl 5 sts wyif; rep from * to end.
Rnd 18: K.

Rep Rnds 17-18 three more times and then Rnd 17 once more.

Rnd 26: K7, *GS, k9; rep from * to last 3 sts, GS, k2.
Rnd 27: *Sl 5 sts wyif, k5; rep from * to end.
Rnd 28: K.

Rep Rnds 27–28 three more times and then Rnd 27 once more.

Rnd 36: K2, *GS, k9; rep from * to last 8 sts, GS, k7.

Rep Rnds 17-36 twice more.

  1. Crown Shaping

    Change to dpn when necessary.

    Rnd 1: *Sl 5 wyif, ssk, k1, k2tog; rep from * to last st—72 (80, 88) sts.
    Rnd 2: K.
    Rnd 3: *Sl 5 wyif, k3; rep from * to last st.

    Rep Rnds 2-3 three more times.

    Rnd 10: *Ssk, GS, k2tog, sl 3 wyif; rep from * to last st—54 (60, 66) sts.
    Rnd 11: K.Rnd 12: K3, sl 3 wyif; rep from * to last st.

    Rep Rnds 11-12 three more times.

    Rnd 19: K4, *GS, k5; rep from * to last 2 sts, GS, k1.
    Rnd 20: *K3tog, k3; rep from * to last st—36 (40, 44) sts.
    Rnd 21: K.Rnd 22: *K1, k3tog; rep from * to last st—18 (20, 22) sts.

  2. Finishing

    Using a tapestry needle, draw up all lps and fasten off. Weave in ends.
