Winter Woodsman Hat

Knitting for men can be a bit of a challenge. There arent a lot of high quality patterns out there, designed with just men in mind. Knit something extra special for the man in your life with the remarkable Winter Woodsman Hat. This color work knit hat pattern is a great choice for any man, just choose three complimentary colors and youll be ready to start knitting. A simple textured pattern gives the hat some more visual interest, without making the pattern overly difficult.

Knitting Needle Size8 or 5 mm

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Hat Circumference: 21 ½"/54.5cm


MATERIALS

  • Simply Soft (170 g/6. oz;288 m/315 yds)
  • Contrast A Forest Floor (9758) 1
  • Contrast B 1
  • Contrast C Bone (9703) 1
  • One circular size U.S. 8 (5mm) needle, 16"/40.5cm long or size to obtain gauge.
  • Four size U.S. 8 (5mm) double-pointed needles (dpn)
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle

 

GAUGE
In Stoockinette stitch, using size U.S. 8 (5mm) needles, 18 sts and 24 rnds = 4”/10cm.

INSTRUCTIONS
STITCHES USED
K2, p2 rib


Slip stitch pattern:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: *K1, sl 1; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: P1, *yb, sl 1, yf, p1; rep from * to last st, sl 1.
Rep Rnds 1-4 for Slip st patt.


NOTE
When changing colors, always cross yarn in back of work to prevent holes.


HAT
Brim
Using A and circular needle, CO 96 sts. Join being careful not to twist st, placing marker at beg of rnd. Work around in k2, p2 rib for 5”.


Crown
Work in Slip st patt alternating one row each of B, C and A throughout. Work until hat measures 9” from CO sts ending with Rnd 1.

Shaping:

(Note: Shaping is always worked on patt Rnd 2. Change to dpns when hat becomes too small for circular needle.)


First dec:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K16, k3tog, rep from * to last st, k1--86 sts.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep patt Rnds 3 and 4.

Second dec:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K14, k3tog; rep from * to last st, k1—76 sts.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep patt Rnds 3 and 4.


Third dec:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K12, k3tog; rep from * to last st, k1—66 sts.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep patt Rnds 3 and 4.


Fourth dec:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K10, k3tog, rep from end with k1—56 sts.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep patt Rnds 3 and 4.


Fifth dec:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K8, k3tog, rep from end with k1—46 sts.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep patt Rnds 3 and 4.


Sixth dec:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K6, k3tog, rep from end with k1—36 sts.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep patt Rnds 3 and 4.


Seventh dec:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K4, k3tog, rep from end with k1—26 sts.
Rnd 3: *K2, k3tog; rep from * around, end k1—16 sts.
Fasten off leaving a 12” strand. Thread strand through yarn needle and slip through remaining sts drawing firmly to close.
Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
