NotesThis pattern calls for 2 balls (red, white) of worsted weight yarn and one ball of super bulky fur yarn. Recommended yarns are: RED HEART® Soft®: 1 ball each White 4600 and Really Red 9925, and RED HEART® Boutique Fur™: 1 ball Polar 9100.

You will also need 3 stitch markers, a yarn needle, and a pom pom maker for this knitting pattern.

Knitting Needle Size17 or 12.75 mm, 8 or 5 mm

Finished SizeHat fits dog neck size 11 (13½, 16½, 19½,)” [28 (34, 42, 50) cm].

Santa Doggie Hat and Beard

This project is knitted flat and then seamed. Directions are for size X-Small. Changes for sizes Small, Medium and Large are in parentheses. The dog in the photo is wearing size Small. White is yarn A. Red is yarn B. Fur yarn is yarn C. 

Hat

  1. Begin the Neck:

    With smaller needles and A, cast on 48 (60, 72, 84) sts.

  2. Row 1: K2, P2. Continue in K2, P2 ribbing until piece measures 3 (4, 5, 6)” [8 (10, 13, 15) cm] from cast on.  

  3. Next row: Continuing in K2, P2 pattern, work first 12 (16, 18, 22) sts, bind off 24 (28, 36, 40) sts, work last 12 (16, 18, 22) sts.  

  4. Next row: Continuing in K2, P2 pattern, work first 12 (16, 18, 22) sts, cast on 24 (28, 36, 40) sts, work last 12 (16, 18, 22) sts. Continue in K2, P2 pattern for 1 (1½, 2, 2½)” [3 (4, 5, 6) cm]. 

  5. Last row: Purl across.

  6. Crown of Hat:

    Change to B. 
    Row 1: K8 (10, 12, 14) sts, place st marker, K16 (20, 24, 28) sts, place st marker, K16 (20, 24, 28) sts, place st marker, K last 8 (10, 12, 14) sts. 

  7. Row 2: Purl across.

  8. Row 3: Knit across.

  9. Row 4: Purl across.

  10. Row 5: Knit across.

  11. Row 6: Purl across.

  12. Row 7: *Knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, slip marker, SSK; repeat from * to end of row–42 (54, 66, 78) sts.

  13. Repeat Rows 4-7 until 6 sts are left on needle. Bind off.

Beard

  1. With larger needles and C, cast on 3 sts.

  2. Row 1: Kfb, knit to last st, kfb—5 sts.

  3. Row 2: Knit

  4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until there are 7 (9, 11, 13) sts on needle. Bind off. 

Finishing

  1. With A, whipstitch beard to neck just below the opening left from the bound-off sts. Whipstitch the side edges of the neck together, forming a tube.

  2. With B, whipstitch the side edges of the crown together to form the hat.

  3. With A and pompom maker, make a pompom. Attach to top of hat.

  4. With yarn needle, weave in all loose ends. Finished hat should look like this.
