Big Comfy Sweater

Notes1. Sweater is made from two identical pieces: Back and front.

Gauge17 sts = 4” [10 cm]; 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Instructions

Pattern Stitches

2x2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts + 2)
Row 1 (right side): K2, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts to end of row.
Repeat Row 2 for 2x2 Rib.

Ridge Pattern
Row 1 (right side): Knit.
Rows 2 and 3: Purl.
Row 4: Knit.
Repeat Rows 1–4 for Ridge pattern.

Back

Cast on 94 (102, 110, 118, 126, 134) sts. Work in 2x2 Rib until piece measures about 3” [7.5 cm] from beginning.
Work in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) until piece measures about 20 (20½, 21, 21½, 21, 21)” [51 (52, 53.5, 54.5, 53.5, 53.5) cm] from beginning (or desired length to underarm), end with a wrong side row.

  1. Cast On for Sleeves
    Row 1 (right side)
    : Cast on 34 sts, knit to end of row—128 (136, 144, 152, 160, 168) sts.
    Row 2: Cast on 34 sts, purl to end of row— 162 (170, 178, 186, 194, 202) sts.
    Work in Ridge pattern until piece measures about 10 (10½, 11, 11½, 12, 12)” [25.5 (26.5, 28, 29, 30.5, 30.5) cm] from cast-on rows.
    Bind off.

Front

Make same as back.

Finishing

Leaving side edges of ribbing unsewn for side slits, sew side seams. Sew shoulder/top of sleeve seams, leaving about 7 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8)” [18 (18, 18, 20.5, 20.5, 20.5) cm] open at center for neck; neckline will shape naturally with gravity. Sew underarm/sleeve seams.
Weave in ends.
