Knit 12 rows in stockinette st.
Knit 12 rows in garter stitch
BO first  4 stitches in the next row, continue knitting across the row
Then BO the first 4 stitches in the next row continue knitting across the row.  Knit for 4 more inches.  BO all stitches.

Fold the piece together up to where the flap begins and sew up the sides.  I added a button just to break the monotony of all black. There is no buttonhole.

Strap:

Using size 10 needles, CO 40 stitches,(remember to hold to strands together):  knit one row and then BO.  I sewed the strap ends together then attached it to the side of the purse.  The strap can be tucked into the purse to use as a clutch purse.
