Oversized Shawl

Add a touch of sophistication to your wardrobe with this beautiful Oversized Shawl. This comfy knit shawl is sure to not only keep you warm but also looking stylish. Keep it around the house for those times you get a little bit chilly or wear it out as a barrier between you and the wind. This Oversized Shawl knows no bounds. While the idea of knitting such a large shawl (especially one with colorwork knitting) may seem daunting to some, it doesn't have to be. Utilizing only garter stitch knitting, all this easy knit shawl pattern requires is some time and patience.

Knitting Needle Size10 or 6 mm

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge15 sts = 4” [10 cm]; 28 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Garter Stitch (knit every row). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.

Finished SizeShawl measures 24” x 60” [61 cm x 152 cm]

  • RED HEART® Soft®: 3 balls each 4614 Black A, 9440 Light Grey Heather B (Art. E728 available in solid color 5 oz (141 g), 256 yd (234 m), print 4 oz (113 g), 204 yd (187 m), and heather 4oz (113 g), 212 yd (194 m) balls)
  • Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 6mm [US 10]
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

Special Abbreviations:
K2TOG = Knit 2 sts together.
SSK = Slip next 2 stitches, one at a time as if to knit, to right needle, insert point of left needle through front of sts, knit these sts together through back loop.

Note: When not in use, carry colors A and B up side of work.
 

Pattern Stitch

Garter Stitch
Knit every row.

First Mitered Square

Using A, cast on 60 sts.
Row 1 (Wrong Side): Knit 30 sts, place marker, knit 30 sts.
Row 2 (Right Side): Attach B, knit 28 sts,k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to end of row.
Row 3: Knit across row.
Row 4: Change to A, knit to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to end of row.
Row 5: Knit across row.
Next Rows: Repeat rows 4 and 5 changing colors from A to B every two rows until 2 stitches remain. Ending with color A. Remove marker and k2tog. Do not bind off. Use last remaining stitch to pick up and knit along left side of mitered square.

Mitered Squares 2-6

With right side facing and using the last stitch from First Mitered Square on right needle, pick up and k29 sts evenly along left edge of FIRST MITERED SQUARE, then cast on 30 sts — 60 sts.

Repeat Rows 1-5 of FIRST MITERED SQUARE until 2 sts are left. K2tog and leave the last st from Mitered Square on right needle. Pick up and k29 sts evenly along left edge of Mitered Square, then cast on 30 sts 60 sts.

Repeat until there are 6 mitered squares in the strip.
Fasten off last st of last Mitered Square.
Make 3 strips of 6 Mitered Squares.
Using yarn needle and mattress stitch, join 3 strips together lengthwise. See photo for placement.
