Materials List

  • Worsted weight yarn, approx. 50 grams total, worked 4 strands
  • Small amount of fun yarn, approx. 10 yards
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

Instructions

  1. Working with 4 strands of worsted weight yarn, cast on:

    • Newborn: 10 stitches
    • 3 to 6 months: 14 stitches
    • 6 to 12 months: 16 stitches
    • 1 to 3 years: 18 stitches
    • 3 to 5 years: 18 stitches
    • 5 to 8 years: 18 stitches
    • 8 to 12 years: 20 stitches
    • Adult: 22 stitches

  2. Knit every row until the rectangle measures:

    • Newborn: 12 inches
    • 3 to 6 months: 15 inches
    • 6 to 12 months: 18 inches
    • 1 to 3 years: 20 inches
    • 3 to 5 years: 21 inches
    • 5 to 8 years: 22 inches
    • 8 to 12 years: 23 inches
    • Adult: 24 inches

  3.  Cast off with 15-inch yarn ends. Fold the rectangle in half, (to form somewhat of a square shape), and sew up the back seam of the hood.

  4. Turn the work right side out. Thread a length of fun yarn into a yarn needle, and pass through a row of stitches at the front of the hat. (This design passed the fun yarn through the second row in.)

  5. Secure the fun yarn on each side of the hat with several stitches. (The fun yarn is not functional, it is purely for
    decorative purposes.)

  6. Make 3 tassels (see below). Attach one to the top point of the hat, and one on each bottom front corner of the hat.

How to Make a Tassel

  1. Wrap yarn around 4 fingers, approx. 20 times.

  2. Tie the bundle together securely.

  3. Tie another length of yarn around the tassel, to form a ball at the top.

  4. Pull the ends of the knotted yarn through to the center of the tassel.

  5. Trim the ends.

  6. Use the two strands of yarn remaining to tie the tassel onto your work.

  7. Weave the yarn ends into the finished work.
