Row 1: knit.
Row 2: purl.
Repeat these 2 rows.
Tension/Gauge: To achieve a good result it is essential to make a tension square:
16 sts & 17 rows over St st using 7.0 mm needles = 10 cm (4 in) square.

Instructions

Using 5.0 mm needles cast on 73 sts. Starting with a knit row work in St st for 8 rows, then change to 7.0 mm needles and continue in St st until work measures 15 cm (6 in) (26 rows).
Next row (dec): k1, * k2tog, k7, rep from * to end of row. (= 8 decreases across the row, 65 sts remain).
Work 5 rows on these 65 sts.
Next row (dec): k1, *k2tog, k6, rep from * to end of row. (= 8 decreases across the row, 57 sts remain).
Work 5 rows on these 57 sts.
Next row (dec): k1, *k2tog, k5, rep from * to end of row. (= 8 decreases across the row, 49 sts remain).
Work 5 rows on these 49 sts.
Next row (dec): k1, *k2tog, k4, rep from * to end of row. (41 sts remain).
Work 3 rows on these 41 sts.
Next row (dec): k1, *k2tog, k3, rep from * to end of row. (33 sts remain).
Work 3 rows on these 33 sts.
Next row (dec): k1, *k2tog, k2, rep from * to end of row. (25 sts remain).
Work 3 rows on these 25 sts.

  1. Cut the yarn 40 cm from the knitting and pass the yarn through the 9 sts and fasten off.
    Fold the hat in half. Stitch the seam, sewing the first 8 rows on the RS of work to allow for the edge to roll back.
    Using the wool needle, weave the cut ends of the yarn through the stitches at the edges for a few rows and cut off the extra yarn.
