- Sizes U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) and U.S. 8 (5 mm) circular knitting needles 16" [40 cm] long
- Set of four size U.S. 8 (5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
- Stitch marker
GAUGE
18 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking stitch with larger needles and 1 strand.

INSTRUCTIONS
With 2 strands of MC tog and smaller circular needle, cast on 88 sts. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.
1st rnd: Knit.
2nd rnd: Purl.
Rep last 2 rnds until work from beg measures 2½" [6 cm], ending on a knit rnd.
Work Latvian Braid: 1st rnd: *With 2 strands of MC, K1. With 2 strands of A, K1. Rep from * around.
2nd rnd: With both MC and A held in front of work, *With MC, P1. With A, P1. When switching yarns, wrap yarn for next st under yarn used for previous st. Rep from * around.
3rd rnd: *With MC, P1. With A, P1. When switching yarns, wrap yarn for next st over yarn used for previous st. Rep from * around.
Break A and 1 strand of MC.
With rem 1 strand of MC and larger circular knitting needle, knit in rnds until work from beg measures 6" [15 cm].

5th rnd: *K7. K2tog. Rep form * around. 64 sts.

9th rnd: *K5. K2tog. Rep from * around. 48 sts.
11th rnd: *K4. K2tog. Rep from * around. 40 sts.
13th rnd: *K3. K2tog. Rep from * around. 32 sts.

Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.
Pompom
Wrap A around 4 fingers approx 90 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape. Sew to top of Hat.
