Grandma's Famous Bobble Knit Blanket

We've all learned the recipe for Grandma's famous lasagna, and we've definitely stolen the pattern for Grandma's knit dishcloths. Now, finally, we have the pattern for Grandma's Famous Bobble Knit Blanket. You know the one. This blanket was the one you cuddled up with every time you visited Grandma and Grandpa and missed the moment you got home. Now you can learn how to knit an afghan with the same timeless gray-and-white color scheme and fun texture of the original. Your grandchildren will love it as much as you did!

Knitting Needle Size3 or 3.25 mm, Circular Knitting Needles

Yarn Weight(1) Super Fine (27-32 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge1 stitches, 2 rows, 3 inches. stockinette stitch

Materials:

  • Rowan Wool Cotton 4 ply yarn
    • Misty 496 (A) - 8 x 50gm
    • Cloudy 505 (B) - 2 x 50gm
  • 1 pair 3 1/4 mm (no 10) (US 3) needles

 

Measurements: Completed blanket measures 76 cm (30 in) by 102 cm (40 in).

 

Abbreviations:

st(s) = stitch(es)

g st = garter stitch

RS = right side

WS = wrong side

patt = pattern

foll(s) = following/follows

k = knit

p = purl

sl = slip

tog = together

psso = pass slipped stitch over

tbl = through the back loop


Special Abbreviation:

MB = make bobble as folls: (K1, P1, K1) all into next st, turn and P3, turn and K3, turn and P3, turn, sl 1, K2tog, psso.

 

Gauge: 28 sts and 36 rows to 10 cm measured over patt using 3 1/4 mm (US 3) needles.

 

Instructions

 

BLANKET

Using 3 1/4 mm (US 3) needles and yarn A cast on 213 sts. Do not join in the round; the circular needles are simply for holding the large number of stitches.

Work in g st for 12 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

Using a separate length of yarn B for each bobble, work in patt as folls

Row 1 (RS): Using yarn A knit.

Row 2: Using yarn A K7, P to last 7 sts, K7.

Row 3: As row 1.

Row 4: Using yarn A K7, P3, using yarn B P1 tbl, *using yarn A P7, using yarn B P1 tbl, rep from * to last 10 sts, using yarn A P3, K7.

Row 5: Using yarn A K10, using yarn B MB, *using yarn A K7, using yarn B MB, rep from * to last 10 sts, using yarn A K10.

Row 6: As row 2.

Rows 7 to 12: As rows 1 and 2, 3 times.

Row 13: As row 1.

Row 14: Using yarn A K7, P7, using yarn B P1 tbl, *using yarn A P7, using yarn B P1 tbl, rep from * to last 14 sts, using yarn A P7, K7.

Row 15: Using yarn A K14, using yarn B MB, *using yarn A K7, using yarn B MB, rep from * to last 14 sts, using yarn A K14.

Row 16: As row 2.

Rows 17 to 20: As rows 1 and 2, twice.

These 20 rows form patt.

Cont in patt until blanket meas approx 100 cm, ending after patt row 10 and with RS facing for next row.

Work in g st for 11 rows, ending with WS facing for next row.

Cast off knitwise (on WS).
