Thanks so much for the time spent helping us novice knitters!

Yes, this is standard long-tail cast on. I recently found a variation called German Twist (excellent videos on YouTube) that makes a very tidy edge. Many people prefer itfor top down socks. Btw, i found the music in this video kind of creepy too.

My grandmother uses this method of cast on all the time. She can cast on stitches very quickly, much faster than I can using another method. And I've been knitting for over 30 years. DW

This is the only method I know. My grandmother taught me how to cast on & off, how to do a knit stitch and a purl stitch. The rest has been self taught. This is really easy to do!

Creepy. This just gave me the CREEPS. Couldn't even finish watching.

conniedavis3 2229961: why did this video give you the CREEPS? I don't understand.

"missing plug-in" How do I find out, 1. what plug-in I'm missing, and 2. where to go to download said plug-in?

Hi Misstreta, If there is an error message on your screen you probably need the latest version of Flash Player. However, the error message should have a link to the plugin that you need. I hope that helps!

I do not understand why this method of casting on was "creepy".

Gee, I've been doing this for years adnd years, and never heard it called "butterfl" or "slingshot"...its known to me and my friends as "long-tail" cast on. I do not do a loop to start...just start off wrapping. First pass gives you two stitches, one every wrap thereafter.

I'm just thinking of trying to knit, so thought I'd watch this video to see if it's something I could possibly do. After watching it, I'm very excited and think I can do it! Onix is great at showing and explaining (great camera work!), and I like the background music that is very soothing and goes along with the rhythm of knitting. I had tried several other beginning videos, but this one is the best. I can't wait to get started! I'm going to visit my local yarn shop very soon! This is one New Year's resolution that I'm going to follow through on!

Try knittinghelp.com for great videos, nice and slow with explainations and many types of stitches. I learned to knit from this site reciently. Happy Yarning!

I had just thought to myself, "I wish I knew how to cast on using one needle and one hand...." thank you SO much for posting this instruction video. I picked up the technique just like that!

An excellent tutorial! I too liked the music. Thank you.

this was helpful. I liked the music too. :)
