Basic Adult Mittens

Grab your double pointed needles and get started on this easy knit mitten pattern. Simplicity is the rule with the Basic Adult Mitten pattern. Designed with beginners and learning knitters in mind, this easy pattern is a wonderful way to take your knitting to the next level. Creating these warm, functional mittens is a great way to familiarize yourself with using double pointed needles. You can easily dress up this simple pattern by using a colorful yarn or adding your own embellishments to add personality.

Easy

Knitting Needle Size3 or 3.25 mm

Yarn Weight(3) Light/DK (21-24 stitches to 4 inches)

Size - This pattern makes a nice set for small ladies hand or most teenage girls and boys with small hands.

Instructions:

Note: This pattern was knit on three DPN's, if you use four you will have to slightly alter the pattern accordingly.

Cast on 44 sts on DPNs.  Join to knit in round.

Knit 2, purl 2 rib for about 2.5"

K6 rows

7th row: k2, inc 1, k1, inc 1, k to end of row

8th & 9th row: knit

10th row: k2, inc 1, k3, inc 1, k to end of row

11th & 12th row: knit

13th row: k2, inc 1, k5, inc 1, k to end of row

14th & 15th row: knit

16th row: k2, inc 1, k7, inc 1, k to end of row

17th & 18th row: knit

19th row: k2, inc 1, k9, inc 1, k to end of row

 Knit 2, 3 or 4 more rows, I knit until I have about 2.5" from end of cuff.

Slip 2 stitches from #3 needle over to #1 needle.  K3, place 13 sts onto waste yarn (will be 11 plus 1 on each side of the stitches you have held on yarn).  Cast on 3 stitches over needle and held sts, and continue to knit around.

Knit about 27 rows or until you get about 5 3/4."

Dec row: K 4, k2tg, repeat to end of row. 

Knit 3 rows

Dec row: k 3, k2tg, repeat to end of row

Knit 2 rows

Dec row: k 2, k2tg, repeat to end of row

Knit 1 row

Dec row: k 1, k2tg, repeat to end of row

Knit 1 row

k2tg, repeat leaving 6sts.  

Draw end of yarn through the 6 sts and pull tight to finish off.

Thumb

Place the 13 held sts back on needles.  Begin knitting around the thumb, picking up 5-7 sts over the gap where the thumb meets the body of the mitten. 

Knit 3 rows

Decrease to 18 sts.

Knit 15 rows.

Decrease 4 sts evenly across row (14 sts).

Knit 1 row.

Dec row: *k1, k2tg, repeat* (6 sts).

Break yarn, and draw tail through the 6 sts at end of thumb. 

 

Weave in ends.
