Whether it's the middle of winter or the middle of spring, this green knit hat can surely do double duty. Wear this design year-round and you will always be in style.

NotesHat is worked in the round on circular needle. Change to double pointed needles when there are too few stitches for the circular needle.

Knitting Needle Size7 or 4.5 mm, 8 or 5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge18 sts = 4” (10 cm); 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch using larger needle. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

Finished SizeHat measures 22” (56 cm) circumference.

Materials List

  • RED HEART® Soft®: 1 ball 4420 Guacamole
  • Circular Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7] and 5 mm [US 8], 16” (40 cm) long
  • Double Pointed Knitting Needles: 5 mm [US 8]
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle

Hat

Ribbing

With smaller needle circular needle, cast on 100 sts. Join, being careful that sts are not twisted, and begin working in the round. Place marker for beginning of round.
Round 1 (Right Side): [K2, p2] around. Repeat Round 1 for pattern until piece measures approximately 2” (5 cm) from cast on edge.
 

Body

With larger circular needle, knit every round until piece measures approximately 7” (18 cm) from cast on edge.

Shape Crown

Note: Change to double pointed needles as sts allow.
Round 1: [K8, k2tog] around – 90 sts.
Round 2: Knit around.
Round 3: [K7, k2tog) around – 80 sts.
Round 4: Knit around.
Round 5: [K6, k2tog] around – 70 sts.
Round 6: Knit around.
Round 7: [K5, k2tog] around – 60 sts.
Round 8: Knit around.
Round 9: [K4, k2tog] around – 50 sts.
Round 10: Knit around.
Round 11: [K3, k2tog] around – 40 sts.
Round 12: [K2, k2tog] around – 30 sts.
Round 13: [K1, k2tog] around – 20 sts.
Round 14: K2tog around – 10 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and remove stitches from needle. Pull to gather and close top opening.

Finishing

Weave in ends.

This is a classic hat pattern made with a lovely bold color. I like the ribbing on the bottom edge, which helps keep the edge from rolling and makes it a little more snug. You could add a big pom pom to this hat in the same color or a coordinating one for a fun look.

I love the color of this beanie. The green is so bright and bold. It would really stand out from the white snow on a cold winter day.
