Week 1: Intro + Materials + Gauge

I’m Crystal from ChristaCoDesign and I’m sharing a new knitting pattern for this mystery knit along! Today I have the materials you will need along with the knit along schedule for the month.

When the knit along is done you’ll have two complete projects. Then you’ll have to decide if you’re keeping them for yourself or gifting them to a friend!

Skill Level
Easy

This knitting pattern is an easy all over stitch. It’s a four row repeat that uses only knits and purls.

Skills / Abbreviations
These are the abbreviations and skills you’ll need to knit this pattern. You can use any cast on you like. The basic bind off is also all you need to finish this pattern up.

BO - bind off
CO - cast on
K - Knit
P - purl

Materials

  1. Dishie, a #4 medium worsted weight yarn (100% cotton, 190 yd / 100 g). You can substitute another #4 weight yarn if you like, but cotton yarn is highly recommended for this pattern. See yarn amounts below.
  2. 4mm / US Size 6, Yarn needle, Measuring tape, Scissors

This is a striped pattern. You’ll need 6 different colors. One main color and 5 other colors for your stripes. You may choose to work this pattern in a single color or two colors as well.

Small Project Size Yarn Colors + Amounts

Main Color: 1 ball Swan, or 95 yd / 87 m
Color A: 1 ball Inlet, or 5 yd / 5 m
Color B: 1 ball Azure, or 5 yd / 5 m
Color C: 1 ball Dewdrop, or 3 yd / 3 m
Color D: 1 ball Mint, or 3 yd / 3 m
Color E: 1 ball Kenai, or 5 yd / 5 m

These estimated yarn amounts are per each.

Large Project Size Yarn Colors + Amounts

Main Color: 1 ball Swan, or 150 yd / 137 m
Color A: 1 ball Inlet, or 15 yd / 14 m
Color B: 1 ball Azure, or 15 yd / 14 m
Color C: 1 ball Dewdrop, or 9 yd / 8 m
Color D: 1 ball Mint, or 9 yd / 8 m
Color E: 1 ball Kenai, or 15 yd / 14 m

Gauge
4” / 10 cm x 4” / 10 cm = 20 sts x 32 rows in stockinette stitch

Gauge is not terribly important for this pattern.

How to Adjust your gauge

After working a swatch and measuring gauge: If you knit fewer stitches in 4”/10cm than the listed gauge, then your gauge is larger and you may want to go down a needle size.
If you knit more stitches in 4”/10cm then your gauge is smaller and you may want to go up a needle size.

Did not watch the video about how to carry the yarn. Mine measures 5 1/2 inches so did I misunderstand some of the instructions?

How you carry the yarn has nothing to do with the completed size, the gauge determines that, it would appear that your gauge is way off. The gauge is 19 stitches for 4", the cast on is 47 stitches, so the piece should come out around 9.5" and yours is slightly more than half of that. There is a note near the beginning that instructs how to adjust gauge.
