Dad's Knit Hat Pattern

You know that the men in your life need more knitted hats. They just don't know it yet. Knit them Dad's Knit Hat Pattern, just like your pop used to wear. Simple enough to suit a man's style, you won't find many better men's knitting patterns. Free and simple, this hat is perfect for beginning knitting, or simply whipping up a quick, warm piece to keep your husband, sons, or grandsons toasty. They may need it more than we do. It's not like they have enough hair to keep their ears warm!

Beginner

Knitting Needle Size6 or 4 mm, 7 or 4.5 mm, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge1 stitches, 2 rows, 3 inches. stockinette stitch

Materials:

  • Patons® Classic Wool Worsted (3.5 oz/100 g; 205 yds/187 m)
    • Contrast A: Burgundy (00208) - 1 ball
    • Contrast B: Mercury (77044) - 1 ball
  • Set of four sizes U.S. 6 (4 mm) and U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Stitch marker

 

Size: One size to fit average Adult’s head.

 

Abbreviations:

Alt = Alternate(ing)
Approx = Approximate(ly)
Beg = Beginning
K = Knit
K2tog = Knit next 2 sts together
P = Purl
Rem = Remaining
Rep = Repeat
Rnd(s) = Round(s)
Ssk = Slip next 2 stitches knitwise one at a time. Pass them back onto left-hand needle, then knit through back loops together.
St(s) = Stitch(es)
Tog = Together

 

Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

 

Instructions

With A and smaller needles, cast on 96 sts.

Divide sts evenly onto 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st.

1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around. Rep last rnd (K2. P2) ribbing until work from beg measures 5" [12.5 cm].

 

Change to larger needles.

With B, knit in rnds until work from beg measures 9½ [24 cm].

 

Shape top: 1st rnd: *K2tog. K20. ssk. Rep from * around. 88 sts.

2nd and alt rnds: Knit.

3rd rnd: *K2tog. K18. ssk. Rep from * around. 80 sts. Break B.

5th rnd: With A (or C if used), *K2tog. K16. ssk. Rep from * around. 72 sts.

7th rnd: *K2tog. K14. ssk. Rep from * around. 64 sts.

9th rnd: *K2tog. K12. ssk. Rep from * around. 56 sts

11th rnd: *K2tog. K10. ssk. Rep from * around. 48 sts.

13th rnd: *K2tog. K8. Rep from * around. 40 sts.

15th rnd: *K2tog. K6. ssk. Rep from * around. 32 sts.

17th rnd: *K2tog. K4. ssk. Rep from * around. 24 sts.

19th rnd: *K2tog. K2. ssk. Rep from * around. 16 sts.

Break yarn leaving, a long end. Thread end through rem 16 sts. Draw up and fasten securely.

 

Pompom: Holding one strand each of A and B tog, wind yarn around 4 fingers approx 60 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape.

Sew pompom to top of Hat.
