How to you get the pattern? I have tried downloading as indicated, but all I get is some kind of new toolbar

If you are getting a new tool bar, then you are not downloading the pattern, you've accidently hit something else or your computer is doing an automatic update. if you click on "click here for knitting pattern" takes you right to the pattern, from there you can review it, print it or save it. Hope this helps.

I love the pattern, but I think it would have been fair to include more than size medium for the instructions without having to buy them.

It is not the decision of this web site what sizes are offered for no charge-that is the decision of the web site/designer that actually owns the pattern.
